Maher: Southerners Should Only Celebrate Confederate Heritage Once a Year - 'St. Cracker's Day'

Noel Sheppard's picture

As NewsBusters has been reporting, Bill Maher spent much of his week bashing red states.

After taking a cheap shot at Kansas early in Friday's Real Time on HBO, Maher took aim at Southerners saying that they should only celebrate their Confederate heritage once a year - "We'll call it 'St. Cracker's Day'" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

BILL MAHER: New Rule, if Irish Americans can manage to celebrate their heritage in just one day, then Southerners should be able to do also. That’s right, instead of spending the whole year flying the Confederate Flag and saying “The South Will Rise Again,” you get just one day. We’ll call it “St. Cracker's Day.” And we even have the t-shirt [“Kiss Me I’m Yer Sister”]. [Laughter and applause] Tough show for the South.

Hysterical, isn't it?

#1 Remember, he isn't mean, he

Remember, he isn't mean, he is just funnin.

Non, je ne regrette rien. "You aren't angry because I might be a racist, you're angry because you know I'm right".

#2 Let him drag his "funning" ass down here.

I would have to get in a very long line to get a shot at the camel humper.

If anyone EVER wonders why I hate liberals nowadays, it's because you LIKE assholes like Maher.  You tolerate his vile, hate speech, then turn to conservatives and tell us to keep the "hate speech" quiet?

Liberals, either police the Shiite on your side of the aisle, or shut the hell up when we tend to get a bit edgy when some POS like Maher unloads (mostly) on conservative women.

I'm spotting him a good 25 years, and I could still kick his ass.  In fact, I know a couple of ladies who could kick his ass, so bring it on down, mofo.

Comrade Bubba

#3 Ah... "Sarcasm," anyone?

I get the impression that LAM was being sarcastic. Libs aren't usually that funny at dry humor, and LAM gave me a good chuckle with his response. If we good ol' boys can't take a bit of humor, we aren't so good after all.

Bill is brave, braying in the safety of the TV studio. Lets see him take this act out on the road.

Facts are like kryptonite to the liberal.

#5 Idiot

Remember Billy, It is your Party that formed the KKK...

#6 Maher

This pos should be prosecuted and sent to a Southern prison. Then we would see how long his "funny" humor would last. I blame Time/Warner owners of HBO for having NO sense of decency and have called their offices many times. The only answer I get is total bs. The left really steps up and tries to govern its own, doesn't it.

#7 Cheap Shot

Yes, it was a cheat shot, but I will have the give the Bas.... his due, it is kind'a funny!

Ron L.J.L.

#8 Really???

Mocking Catholics AND all of us citizens in the South by calling us vile names is funny??? Up yours, a-hole.

#10 Not

Not even remotely funny. I'd hate to see what you think is "really funny".

#11 I'd call Bill Mohair a

f*****g a*****e, but I don't want to gratuitously offend gay people.

But seriously ... um, bad choice of words.

What I'm trying to say is, Mohair's remaining on the air is an indication of just how small a fraction of the viewing public you need to make the program profitable and give the boss a good income. For him, say a few dirty words a program, sneer at ordinary people, call a few Republican women "c***s," and as long as you endorse abortion and make jokes about Bush's last name and you've got a renewable contract on HBO.

#12 Guttersnipe Comedian Bill Maher is now grasping at straws

After he came out this week defending his own sexist and discusting hyperbolic vitriol against Rush Limbaugh, we are now witnessing his downfall. Keep it up, Bill. Pretty soon your future stand up gigs will be at your nearest arts and crafts gatherings...... in places like Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.

"Someday a real rain will come and wash all this scum off the streets". - Robert DeNiro, Taxi Driver (1976).

#13 Click your heals Dorothy

When your Modus operandi is to demean and discredit people you don't agree with, that is an indication that your political ideology is vapid and without foundation.

During his network days this guy claimed to be a libertarian yet espoused liberal talking points. I thought he was just another stupid comedian and didn't understand what it meant to be a libertarian. After all liberal/libertarian it all kinda sounds the same right Billy?

No - Maher is completely without substance. This guy acts like a liberal because he couldn't get work in hollywood without the card. He gets paid by HBO to behave as a liberal yip dog. But in reality he is a psuedo intellectual without a fiber of conviction in his whole body. Truth is he just hates people which is a reflection of how he views himself. A strong wind would blow this guy back to OZ where he belongs.

#14 You know that if Billy ever

You know that if Billy ever said that stuff to someone who wasn't just an ass-kisser, he'd be picking teeth out of his stool for weeks afterwards. But he's too much of a coward to actually confront people who don't agree with him, and has to stick with his sycophantic audience which isn't smart enough to know when to clap without the flashing red sign.

#15 OK to insult soutnerners

I bet if he insulted a towel headed camel washer like that he'd be off the air for good.

A well regulated militia being necessary to a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

#16 Only one problem, Rick.

That assumes he ever WOULD insult a Muslim. He'd sooner gnaw off his own foot.

#17 and it'd be by the people he

and it'd be by the people he insulted...permanently..

#18 Tick, tick, tick. . . .

. . . Is the clock running out on Billy Boy??

Repeal the Seventeenth Amendment.

#19 My sentiments, too.

Maher sees the handwriting on the wall, so he is taking his circus act up a notch, to try and get as much notoriety as he possibly can.

#20 Why doesn't Bill show us how

Why doesn't Bill show us how brave he is and go do this act in Alabama, Mississippi or Georgia?

#21 Kiss Me, I'm Yer Sister.

Having moved to the South in the late 80's, the first thing I noticed was that, on average, the women were by far and away much prettier then the women of the Chicago area of my youth. The girl in the T-Shirt is pretty much your average looking Southern Lady, so Maher get's that part right, at the very least.

#22 Hey Billy boy, why don't you bring that BS down here to Atlanta

Then we'll show you what the whole can of whoopass looks like - all up close and personal like, too.

Hell, we might even bring along two cans, just fer you. :-)

"But my advice to you can be summed up in two words: Thicker skin." - Jer

#24 Listening for the outrage

Listening for the outrage from the Left over Maher's bigotry: ......................................................................

#25 "We'll call it 'St. Cracker's Day'"

Bill, honey, here's how I see it (and I AM a Southerner) -

A. You are NOT a Southerner

B. You hate and despise people from the South

So WE don't get to call it anything.

#26 Maher and St. Cracker's Day

Well, heck, while we're talking about holidays, there already is one for folks like Bill Maher. It's called "April Fool's Day". And I bet plenty of us Southerners would proudly wear T-Shirts specially made up for the occasion, saying "Bill Maher, we celebrate your day: April Fools Day".

I'd love to kick Bill's whiney li'l butt but there wouldn't be much left after the Southern women got through with him (any one of which are more woman than Bill would ever get).

#27 Question...

Doesn't it sound like what Maher is saying can be construed as hate speech? Anyone familiar with the Clinton imposed law?

#28 Ughhhhhhh........

Now I need to get back in the shower!

That's just my opinion; I could be wrong. -- Dennis Miller

#29 The South

Let's not talk about the South. It was Democratic until the Republican Civil Rights movement when the Black Forefathers came about. They said, "never vote Democrat," unless you like lynching. It was difficult but the racist Democrats were voted out. They implement Jim Crow laws for decades. Now Maher doesn't like the South. Why is that? Does he wish for those bygone Democratic times?

The opposite of Left is Freedom.

#30 Has the Left started boycotting?

Has the Left started boycotting? Didn't think so.

#31 Not worth it

Responding to Billy Maher only gives him the attention he craves.

This is the guy who was being PC while hosting a show called "Politically Incorrect."

His IQ is barely room temperature...

Those who beat their swords into plowshares will end up plowing for those who kept their swords in the first place!

#32 Well bless your little heart Bill

and we all know what that means!

#33 Democrat circus act

Maher is quite the Democrat circus act-- first he goes on quite the rampage this week with his "Toothless Tuesday" slap at the AL and MS GOP primaries, then has the nerve to follow that with a "St Crackers Day" rant on Friday. He's got quite the roll going-- and he should keep right on going with it, til November. It will be one of the biggest reasons for the failure to re-elect Obama if he loses. Bigoted attacks such as his ALWAYS come back to bite the bigot in the butt.
