Open Thread: Obama on Video Saying He Wants Higher Gas Prices

Matthew Sheffield's picture

Despite their hasty and persistent denials, evidence keeps piling up that President Obama and his Administration aren't exactly displeased at the prospect of higher fuel costs. One of the best pieces of evidence has been Department of Energy secretary Steven Chu's remarks about wanting fuel prices here to be comensurate with Europe's higher rates.

While Obama himself has also famously said that he wanted the price of coal electricity to "necessarily skyrocket," until now, there hasn't been a video of him stating the same sentiment about gas prices. Now there is. Watch below the fold.

The comments made by then-presidential candidate Obama were in response to a question about what sorts of "sacrifices" that Obama would be willing to expect of his fellow Americans. Immediately, he reverted to the left-wing faith in global warming saying we need to "get serious" about stopping it by making electrical power companies "invest" in so-called green energy which he admitted was more expensive.

The second "sacrifice" Obama wanted people to make was to pay higher gas prices. Here's his full statement:

Not only do we have to invest in mass transit, but we have also have to make sure that, we also have to make sure that people are making good decisions about cars. And their freedom--people are, you know, people are free to buy a [Chevrolet] Suburban if you want, it gets 8 miles a gallon but we can't subsidize to make sure that you have--you are able to fill up your Suburban tank at a really cheap rate because that's not the trajectory of oil prices worldwide.

So basically, forcing his apocalyptic enviro worldview on Americans is what Obama views as sacrifice. Who could've known at the time that Obama also felt the same about forcing abortion pills and birth control on religions who disagree with them as well?

#1 Insulate our homes????

Why hasn't anyone thought of that before????

The man is positively brilliant!!  What a genius!!

OK, so I know that's not what this blog is really about, but I just LOL'd when I heard him say that.

Also, I noticed that the young man asks him what he (Obama) is willing to ask the American people to sacrifice in order to bring about Obama's vision of a brighter future.

Yep, that's an Obamabot, all right!!

Let me rephrase his question:  Mr. President, what are you going to ask Americans to give up so that you can have your way?

I'm sorry, I couldn't get through the whole video.  I needed a barf break.

#2 Yea we're screwed

Looking back on that nonsense is a barfer, no doubt. His mind is on making Utopia.

#7 Here is a topic I have not talked about for a while

......however I feel it is relevant. I totally agree that Rick Santorum never specifically said he would try to take birth control away from people and the msm are wrong for saying he did

However there is no gray area about him saying he is going to be punishing distributors that make what he considers indecent films. I believe this is a mistake and will backfire

#8 it is about standing for what he belives in

Turn it around the other way, why are your for sex trafficking and forced sex slaves. A MAJORITY of the women in adult movies are not making a CHOICE to be in it.

I did not even offer my view if he is right or wrong. I just said I believe it will backfire

#10 ⇒ Really, Shawn

So you don't think deadbeat dads should have their wages garnished to support their kids?

Should murderers go to jail for their crimes even if it's against their will?

And if you say "Anybody forcing anyone to do something against their will should be punished", is that only if those doing the forcing give their consent to being punished?

Might want to shy away from absolutes.

#11 Good morning shawn

As usual your post is a distortion of the truth. Josh Barro misrepresents what what Santorum has on his website. Santorum says he will enforce existing laws against illegal pornography. Are you against enforcing the law?

Obviously you hold it against Santorum for not living in your gray world of compromise.

Jesus Loves You so much He died for you

#12 Good morning cocodrie

Everybody knows my position on this so I am not going to bother.

I believe the article is not biased. This is Forbes not MSNBC

#13 S.O.P. for you

Quote a biased opinion piece instead of the actual fact.

Jesus Loves You so much He died for you

#14 Maybe Pornboy©®™ ought not lie to us then.

Pornboy©®™: ...he is going to be punishing distributors that make what he considers indecent films.

From Pornboy's©®™ link --- The Daily Caller flags a little-discussed position paper on Rick Santorum’s campaign website—his pledge to aggressively prosecute those who produce and distribute pornography. Santorum avers that “America is suffering a pandemic of harm from pornography.” He pledges to use the resources of the Department of Justice to fight that “pandemic,” by bringing obscenity prosecutions against pornographers.

The Forbe's article actually links to Sen. Santorum's website. Here are the excerpts --

I am concerned about the widespread distribution of illegal obscene pornography...

Current federal “obscenity” laws prohibit distribution of hardcore (obscene) pornography on the Internet, on cable/satellite TV, on hotel/motel TV, in retail shops and through the mail or by common carrier. Rick Santorum believes that federal obscenity laws should be vigorously enforced.  “If elected President, I will appoint an Attorney General who will do so.”

The Obama Administration has turned a blind eye to those who wish to preserve our culture from the scourge of pornography and has refused to enforce obscenity laws. While the Obama Department of Justice seems to favor pornographers over children and families, that will change under a Santorum Administration.

I proudly support the efforts of the War on Illegal Pornography Coalition that has tirelessly fought to get federal obscenity laws enforced.

Pornboy©®™ LIES again. The man is talking about enforcing CURRENT laws. Nothing more. Not what he considers obscene as Pornboy©®™ LIES at us. But enforcing what the CURRENT laws label as obscene. YOU LIE AGAIN Pornboy©®™.

#15 ~Yeah, everybody knows your position, shawn

And it ain't 'missionary'.

Obama's WTF 2012 campaign slogan: "A dog in every pot"

#16 lol Bru

Thx that was good.

#17 Poor Pornboy©®™

Looks like Sen. Santurum lost the all important Pornboy©®™ vote. All one of him. Sad. Go Mitt Romney, he is so handsome, he could star in Porn. Wrapped up Pornboy's©®™ vote!

#18 Shawn

From everything I've read so far, Santorum is only talking about enforcing existing Laws.

#19 What he considers ....

The standard of enforcement is not what Rick Santorum considers indecent. It is the precedents established by the courts in previous cases on EXISTING pornography laws that will determine what is pornography and what is expression.

Santorum has not suggested there be any change to any of the existing law on this subject. He merely observes that these laws should be enforced.

#20 100th coal fired energy plant now closed

As part of Obama's attack on energy production in the US, there are now 100 coal fired energy plants which have now been shut down. Solar panels, anyone?

Why isn't the Republican leadership jumping all over this? While Obama continues his attack on the American people via destroying in-country energy production, all the R's bring to the fight are popsicle sticks and paper hats. Just plain pathetic.

"This is not your mother's Democratic Party"--Andrew Breitbart, CPAC, February 2012

#21 Where indeed?

This bogus potus has declared war on the American people a long time ago and these shutting down of power plants is akin to having them bombed by foreign powers to harm our infrastructure.  That description is only fitting as the bogus potus is a foreigner anyway.

As for where the Republican leadership is, the answer to that is "WHAT leadership?"

American's should be storming DC and forcing action to get rid of the EPA and others like them and the states should be taking back control over energy.  But it's not happening.  I truly think Americans are either defeated already(they think they are) or just continue to think the bogus potus is just incompetent.  I'm not seeing any fighting spirit like we did with the TEA parties anymore.

We should be up in arms about this instead of foolishly waiting for the election.  It's painfully obvious(or should be) that the bogus potus doesn't want to chance anything on the election so he's doing everything he can to ruin things before that time by accelerating his plans.

So why nothing?

#22 The Republican leadership is

The Republican leadership is asleep at the wheel, and the MSM is dancing as fast as it can to protect Obama (as we all know). It will be up to us (and the local and state level) to force the change. Thems the new rules, it would seem.

Obama's political philosophy mirrors that of the dictator Robert Mugabe, president of Zimbabwe, who has turned the country upside down (through "wealth and land re-distribution") and thereby turned that once prosperous nation into a cesspool of corruption and crime. It's worth studying Mugabe to see what our future would look like under a successful Obama re-election.

#23 Impeachment

Well, I took a few days off from everything and yeah, true to form, things aren't just getting any better with the world.  Cameron made an absolute damn fool of himself, the people of the UK should toss his sorry ass out of the PM, or at least the Queen should.  And RE: gas prices, well, didn't do too much driving around, not when it costs 100 bucks to fill my tank when that's money that could be better invested in other things like oh, let's say food or clothes or services, but because I need gas to get to work, those things get cut back.  But you all know how that goes.  Meanwhile, I'll go check my tire pressure! /sarc

What I'm curious is does anyone know what happened to that impeachment filing that was done the week before last week by a Congressman because of Panetta's comments in a hearing about not needing Congress for military action or something?

Whatever happened with that?  It was on Drudge for about a day and then was gone.

#24 I think ...

Boner is still looking for his Boehner, so he can check to see if he is man enough to actually move it forward.

He must have lost it that day on the golf course with the RBFSOB.

Comrade Bubba

#25 Good article on Drudge today.

Headline is that Biden called the RBfSOB "The Man of Steel."

Should have read "The Man of Steal" don't you think?

Also saw that when someone told Biden that "the lead Monkee had died," he asked when his swearing in was going to be.

He did add that "he was clean and articulate," however.

Comrade Bubba

And they are succeeding in doing so, and that very rapidly.

Another lie by Obama. Is he just stupid or is it he thinks we are?

#29 Exactly, Bass

I had a Jeep Grand Wagoneer (the big old honkin' one, V-8) would get about 15 mph on the highway, and about 10 whilst towing a 6,000 lb., 23 ft. boat.

The XTerra got almost 20 on the highway on our trip (and I was driving with the hammer down, at about 85).

The Won definitely thinks WE'RE the ones who are stupid, which of course, is going to bite him in the butt.

I've been on the bench for much of this week with a viral sinus infection. Doctor says it make take 2 weeks to get better or go completely away. I am feeling better and ready to post again Amazing what an antibiotic and a sinus rinse can do.

On Tuesday night the trek to New Orleans and the NCAA championhip began. Each night there is a pregame show and comments at half time of the games. I am so sick of Charles Barkley. This guy fell out of the stooopid tree and hit every limb on the way down. I forgot who the host was the other night but he went to ranting and raving over the guy and his support of Republicans. I couldn't get over it. (I've tried to find the video but can't.) I am no longer watching the pregame or halftime as long as he is on there. I feel he needs to be a co-host with the unreverend Al. That would boost the IQ up on the show by maybe ten points.

"The trouble with our liberal friends is not that they are ignorant; it's just that they know so much that isn't so." President Ronald Reagan

#62 A-10? No. Those are F4

A-10? No. Those are F4 phantoms. You can make out the tails angled down. Hard to tell from this angle if the Tomcats are Tomcats with their wings folded back or the F15 Eagle. The larger planes look like they may be the C5A.

Not F4's, those are F16's, some A10's and it appears there are some F15's and F14's mixed in. Looks like there may be some F18's in the mix to.

Save a SeAL, club a liberal/troll!!

#63 Da planes....da planes!

I couldn't really tell what the prop planes were to the right of the pictures, probably Hercules or smaller, but there were a sh*tload of F15s there.  The F4s were to the top part of the picture near the C5 Galaxy's, there were the A 10s with missing wings(the twin engines in the tail section make it easy to tell), a few F16s, not as many F14s as I thought there would be.  The F18s were near the bottom, there were just a few compared to the rest.

Then there are those trainer jets(so many!) of which there are a lot of as well to the lower part of the picture, and to the right of the Galaxy's, some smaller two(or three seater) planes, not sure which ones those are.

I could swear I saw some sikorsky helicopters, saw some sea hawks and chinooks.  And all those fuel tanks!!

Those were the ones I could identify.

What are those planes with the long wings that are near the b-52s and the B-1B bombers?  They aren't F14s, I've seen them before, but can't remember which ones they are.  They look almost like arrowheads.

How many hundreds of millions of dollars went into all that hardware.......

Great if sad picture, nice to be able to zoom in too.

#64 They may be Vigilantes

Not sure....bigger than than a fighter jet, they actually used to land those on carriers during Vietnam.

#65 No Vigies in that photo either

They have a single vertical stabilizer. The large tactical a/c in the photo have twin vert stab + fixed wing. --> they are F-15s.

#66 Way over on the right are some F-111s

Some have their wings swept, some don't.....a couple are still in camo paint and others have been shrinkwrapped. You can tell them by their very wide cockpit,, where the pilots sat side by side.

Up toward the top are some old, old prop planes, not sure what they are. Early Korea vintage, I'd guess.

Cool photos, though. You can zoom out and go all around the world, I found my house.

#67 I think you are looking at

I think you are looking at the wrong plane. There are A10's there with no wings. All you see is the fuselage and the 2 engines at the back by the tail.

#69 From what I am hearing the

From what I am hearing the EA-6 Prowler is being phased out. That is the plane used by the Marines to conduct electronic warfare and intelligence gathering. There are 4 squadrons at Cherry Point. That will be around 2,100 Marines that have to go. It will be 2023 before they get all their F-35s. My son in law and daughter just moved from Cherry Point to Camp Lejeune. He is doing the same job he did with the Prowlers only he is now doing it on the ground. Looks like a goodly number of Marines and sailors will be dropped from Lejeune and New River. Obama's dream of desimating the military is starting to come true.

No. No learning how to fly a Tomcat. As it is, you are everyone's problem. That's because every time you log on to NB you are unsafe. I don't like you BECAUSE YOU ARE DANGEROUS.

#74 Dave, Yea a START 3..No need to have anyone else sign up....

It was inevitable that owing to the rapid retirement of so many Lockheed C-141 Starlifters to AMARC it would not be long before the large scale scrapping of the type began. With no airframe life remaining there is no chance of them returning to the USAF active inventory and with so relatively few C-141 left operational there is no requirement for a large number of reclamation aircraft at AMARC.

Due to the size of the C-141 initial scrapping is being carried out in situ using the same method that has been used on the scrapping over the years of the mighty B-52 Stratofortress. A crane with a slipper gear raises a 13,500lb guillitine blade to a height of approx 60 foot and then drops it, severing the aircraft with ease. This technique appears simplistic but it proves extremely effective.

I tried to find photos of that sickening sight google has erased them...

#75 Speaking of planes....a B-29 just flew over

There was the sound of serious big engines, and ACA looked out the window and said a B-29 just flew over. I caught the tail end of it out the front door.

The Confederate Air Force is in Fort Lauderdale this weekend, may have to go see FiFi, they had the B-17 here the last time.

#76 Hello Blonde.

There are no F-4 or F-14 in that photo.

The top and bottom 2 rows are F-15s. The upper center row are F-16's.

#77 NL

Did you move the non-static picture around? I see what you mean about the F-15's though, now that you say it.

When you look at the moveable picture, up at the very top there are some rather antique looking aircraft? What are those?

I'm going to get up early to see the B-29 fly over again tomorrow morning....may go down and take the tour tomorrow. This is the first time they've brought it here, usually they have the Flying Fortress. It sounds quite different than the 17, too.

The scrollable version of this photo reveals many more types.

There is a section of F-111. I see a section of F-18. Other types : P-3, B=57, RB-57H B-52, B-1, C-5, C-130, C-123, C-135, C-141, A-4, F-4, A-6, S-3, E-2, A-10, A-7, SH-3,T-2, T-37, T-38, T-34 among them. There are even some A-3's and S-2F'S. There are a bunch of Helos. I think these are mostly CH-46 and CH-53 types. There are a few interesting one-ofs in other parts of the base. I see a T-33, a P-2V, F-8, F-100 and a C-130 Firebee drone launcher. That is the C-130 with the bizarre yellow and red paint job.
There are all of 8 F-14s. They are in the upper right center of the scrollable area.

Pains me to see this. I have time in 5 of the types present there.

I did not see any RA-5C. These were the Vigilantes you were mentioning.

#84 Thanks, NL

I did recognize the F-111's. That's a hard one to miss.

I know what you mean about that being a painful picture to view. If Obama has his way....we'll see 2/3 of the active duty aircraft there in less than six months.

On a good note, I saw the B-29 fly over the house again on Sunday. It was beautiful...big (but not huge) and silver. As I noted the other day, though.....totally different engines from the 17....nothing else sounds like the 17, it's a unique sound.

As for the Vigi's.....someone mentioned an odd plane, not huge, but not small. It still boggles my mind that that aircraft was ever operated from a carrier. I suppose they're all gone now, how sad.

I'm glad I found that site, is rather fun. If you scroll way can move all around the country (maybe even the globe)....and then zoom back in to find whatever you want to see....I found my house (the most recent satt pic I've seen so far).

Thanks for the update, NL....good to have a pilot's perspective, I'm merely an amateur.

#85 Interesting you should comment on a/c size

operating from carriers.

Go to the north by noreast edge of the mothball area. You will see some A-3 Skywarriors there. These are large, twin engine attack types. We had two variants of these in shipboard service : a tanker version and an electronic warfare bird and they operated from the Midway class. They were usually referred to as 'whales'.

I hope we can get the F-22 back......What about it Mitt?
NL>>Nice Carrier landing with the C-130....

Hawaii's airports still permit landings (and take offs) of turbojets... Only one left, one of the first 737's ever built which is now an Aloha air freighter, the sound of that aircraft, brings back memories of air shows when I was a kid.

#87 Check this out J

Just wow! Amazing talent.

#88 Hey, Ruk

I saw that, the UK Daily Mail always has some interesting "interest" stories. Like the artists that do the 3-D chalk drawings on the road and whatnot. Very cool, indeed.

#89 SCOTUS Will Not Allow TV Camera’s re: Obamacare Arguments

The SCOTUS will not allow live TV coverage of the arguments of the Obamacare case (scheduled for Mar 26-28) but will release a recorded transcript of the proceedings late in the day after the arguments have been conducted.

Evidently C-SPAN and ”other media outlets” apparently don’t like the decision and want the proceedings broadcast live… So does Nancy Pelosi.

WHAT? You need pictures? The ‘recordings’ aren’t good enough!

Most people who have spent more than a couple of hours here at NB (and have been paying attention) can see right through the leftist attempts to dramatize the proceedings…

What better way to show the ‘Nasty Face of Conservatism’ than by endlessly repeating the pictures of the conservative justices asking harsh legal questions of the well-intentioned and caring attorneys representing the poor disadvantaged people who are only asking for hope and change?

Personally, I’m glad the SCOTUS isn’t playing along with this Political-Theater crud.

#90 I probably couldn't

I probably couldn't understand what they are talking about anyway. The lawyers are going to cite case law after case law to make their point. To me the main fact should be it is about the constitution not the crap that the FDR court pulled during his time stretching the commerce clause. That is supposed to be where this is being argued.

This book is the best I ever read on SCOTUS decisions. Most of those were from the FDR court.

A well regulated militia being necessary to a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

#91 Thanks Rick,

I'll be checking that link out soon.

BTW: Hope you're feeling better and also thanks for the info on the EA-6B.

#92 This is how you know that it's a documentary, and not

some fictional, partisan campaign ad.

#93 Thanks Bk*

I would never watch this "documentary" so thanks for letting me in. Tom Hanks has proven he is an idiot or he has never actually heard Obama give a speech.

#94 I need to keep that bookmarked

It should help keep me on my diet because it makes my stomach churn.

Let's not forget that while making "The Pacific" Hanks said WWII was about people having different color skin and other bull. No, it wasn't at all about Japanese aggression.

#95 The people high gas prices

The people high gas prices hurt the most are the working poor, who can't afford to fill the gas-guzzlers that are the only cars they can afford. And notice that BO doesn't advocate tax "credits" to THEM for replacing those clunkers with newer, more efficient used cars. Imagine how "green" it would be to take all the '89 Buicks off the road and replace them with '02 Subarus.

And for the stupid idea that we can just take public transit:

1. A lot of us are rural
2. Most public transit is no good for shift workers and in-home care providers and other people who don't just sit at a desk from 9-5.

#96 I guess I missed the part in the Obama '08 video

excerpt posted by Matt where candidate Obama stated he wanted gas prices to skyrocket. Would someone please provide the time stamp at which this sentiment was expressed. Thanks in advance., a fact some may find interesting: US oil production declined every year under the previous administration but has increased each year under the current administration.

#98 Good one Bru*

Here are a few more

With all of the lengthy and costly permit regulations, production is moving to less restrictive areas.

#99 ~Exactly, caj

The domestic oil boom is due to drilling on private land, where Obama can't stick his nose in it.

Obama's WTF 2012 campaign slogan: "A dog in every pot"

#100 Note this as well Bru*

From leasing the land, to EPA permit to actual drilling can take as much as 10 to 12 years depending on the locale. Inland drilling is generally must faster but with many regulations. Off shore drilling is more complex because of the size of the rig, the mobility of the rig, and the origion of those rigs.
Here is an example of EPA regulations. A company who owns the rig contracts with dozens of other companies for engineers, roughnecks, caterers, transport boat and helicopter companies. If a rig worker drops a sack of "mud" over board, that could cost one of those companies thousands of dollars. Not to mention other things men do on a rig just for fun...Then these various companies have a legion of lawyers to fight each other as to who will pay the fines, who fights the feds, and who pays the lawyers.

Addition: This article is several years old and was written before Deepwater Horizon incident, new permit regulations, and EPA fight against inland drilling. But it gives a brief description of the complexities of opening a new well.

#102 Did not click on the links. I pretty much know.

So I don't know if this was covered.

Uncle Jer: : ...US oil production declined every year under the previous administration but has increased each year under the current administration.

First of all, we are all sick to death of defending President Bush. Sick to frelling death. He did not open ANWAR so screw him too.

But Uncle Jer's statement is rather dishonest. The old regular method of straight pipe drilling is slowly draining the old easy drilled fields. That is the reason it was declining under President Bush. The reason it has grown in the last three years is because the technology of fracking COMBINED with the technology of horizontal drilling has come of age.

President Obama has gone insane with the drone bombings. Same thing. Drone technology was just starting out under President Bush.

Atascosa County (to the south and southeast of Bexar County, where its county seat of San Antonio can be found), TX is booming due to the fracking revolution.

Less oil being pumped now than in 1970....thank you EPA...

Yea missed the part : OAF of Office,

#106 The idiot Bob McNair

Sipping the Unfair Tax Kool Aid.

He kept insisting how wonderful it is, how progressive the idea is, even after the smokin' hot Becky Quick pointed out to him that consumption taxes by their nature are regressive. With all the talking points he came out with, you'd think we were hearing from ol' Incestmo.

He even gushed over the happy idea of the government dishing out allowance money to everyone. (It is a point of irony that so-called freedom-loving supporters of this boneheaded idea LOVE the idea of the government dishing out allowance money based on what some government bureaucrat determines what YOU need and how much YOU can spend.)

Anyways, he, like other supporters of this idea, make the same basic mistake every time: they assume people are robots and will continue to behave as they do now. Take away an income tax and replace it with a 31.25% sales tax (I'm including my state sales tax that isn't going away) and people's survival strategies will change, and their behavior will change. At which point your problems will begin in earnest.
