NBC's Todd Warns: Romney May Be 'Least Transparent President In a Generation'

Kyle Drennen's picture

At the top of his Tuesday MSNBC morning show The Daily Rundown, NBC chief White House correspondent and political director Chuck Todd cited the Romney campaign's refusal to release a list of top fundraising bundlers as evidence that "if he wins in November, Romney could very well be the least transparent president in a generation." [Listen to the audio or watch the video after the jump]

Todd continued to rant: "Less transparent than the two previous Republican presidential nominees, George W. Bush and John McCain, who did release their bundlers. But the Romney camp – campaign believes there is no penalty with voters and they don't care if the media criticizes them, because the conservative media outlets won't criticize them for this."

Perhaps part of the reason is that Mitt Romney does not want to publicize a list of names for the Obama campaign to go after as part of its "name and shame" effort, as Kim Strassel detailed in the Wall Street Journal in April:

This past week, one of his [Obama's] campaign websites posted an item entitled "Behind the curtain: A brief history of Romney's donors." In the post, the Obama campaign named and shamed eight private citizens who had donated to his opponent. Describing the givers as all having "less-than-reputable records," the post went on to make the extraordinary accusations that "quite a few" have also been "on the wrong side of the law" and profiting at "the expense of so many Americans."

Like Todd, The Washington Post editorial board on Saturday hit Romney for having "secret bundlers," ominously declaring:

The difference between President Obama and presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney when it comes to fundraising is not only that Mr. Romney managed to outraise the president last month. A more troubling difference is that Mr. Romney provided almost no information about the key "bundlers" who helped his campaign vacuum up such huge sums....Why would he hide his roster of key supporters?

Here is a full transcript of Todd's June 12 comments:

CHUCK TODD: One more thing, a Republican operative close to the Romney campaign confirmed to reporters yesterday that Romney will not release the names of his bundlers, saying enough transparency already exists, the FEC reports. Folks, everyone gets criticized for not being transparent enough, but if he wins in November, Romney could very well be the least transparent president in a generation. Less transparent than the two previous Republican presidential nominees, George W. Bush and John McCain, who did release their bundlers. But the Romney camp – campaign believes there is no penalty with voters and they don't care if the media criticizes them, because the conservative media outlets won't criticize them for this.

Chuck Todd: "But the Romney camp – campaign believes there is no penalty with voters and they don't care if the media criticizes them, because the conservative media outlets won't criticize them for this."

Translation: But the Romney camp – campaign believes there is no penalty with voters and they don't care if the media criticizes them, BECAUSE THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA WILL TRASH HIM NO MATTER WHAT HE DOES.

#4 At least we know Romney can keep a secret, right Chuckie?

"Chief White House Correspondent" - LOL.

#5 In this day and age

how do you get to be the Chief White House Correspondent for a major network without graduating college?

#6 We've still got a good

five months to go. These liberal commentators are going batshit crazy. Need I point out the irony of "transparency" in the Obamao administration?

#7 I cannot wait...

I cannot wait for November 6. Romney will have these douches squirming like Eric Holder during his first night at Leavenworth.

"Occupy this...I dare you."

#8 Did I miss the NBC cavalcade of stories on Obama bundlers

during the 2008 campaign? Or at any point in the last 4 years? How about the jailbird real estate bundler Tony Rezko?

"Liberalism is hideous.  It is the antithesis of being pro-human.  It looks at life as a burden in and of itself to be managed, rather than as a blessing to be explored and lived to the fullest." --Rush Limbaugh

#12 Where was Toaddi on the credit cards?

F Chuck Todd, where the hell was your story on Obama's campaign last year taking the filters down and doing it again this year off credit card donations, so that someone can give and give and give and give and give and give and give, again and again, and again, and again, and again, etc. What a shi*(&bag. Obama has done that again this year and what stories you did see last election was that millions were possibe and they would have been illegal, but the MSM wanted nothing to do with that story, notice anything different this time??????

#13 Sorry Chuck Todd - Obama admin is worse than Nixon.

Shortly after this exchange between the ex-veteran WH reporter, Helen Thomas she laid out exactly how "non-transparent" and secretive this Obama WH has been:

Helen Thomas lays in to Robert Gibbs

July 1, 2009 that Obama's grip on the media is even greater than that of Richard Nixon.

Nixon didn’t try to do that. They couldn’t control [the media]. They didn’t try that. What the hell do they think we are, puppets? They’re supposed to stay out of our business. They are our public servants. We pay them. ... I’m not saying there has never been managed news before, but this is carried to fare-thee-well--for the town halls, for the press conferences. It’s blatant. They don’t give a damn if you know it or not. They ought to be hanging their heads in shame.

And, who could possibly argue that it's gotten better?

Would some one please tie Chuck Todd to a chair and refresh his memory.

#14 So, bundlers are BMOC at the campaign HQs?

What a scam. The law prohibits personal contributions of more than $2500 per election, which is supposed to keep big, influential money out of the process. The law permits bundlers to gather other people's contributions in larger piles of money and give that to the candidate, making them Big Shots (big enough to worry WaPo and Todd, among others).

Wow. How cool is it to be a bundler and get all the candidate's love while shelling out no more than $2500! What a scam! What a boondoggle! Way to go, McCain and Feingold!

#15 Yea...

Yea, they kind of missed the mark on that, didn't they.

The Citizens of each State shall be entitled to all Privileges and Immunities of Citizens in the several States. The US Constitution

Unless you're a fetus. The US Supreme Court

Or Anwar al-Awlaki.

#16 This would be true, Todd

This would be true, Todd, but only if it takes Romney about 100 years to get elected. Until then, until an entire generation has passed, Obama will continue to hold the record at the least transparent President. We're still waiting for Obama to release his college transcripts, for example.

By the way, moron, it's not up to Romney to release the names of the "bundelers." It's up to the "bundelers" to do that. That's what the laws says.

The Citizens of each State shall be entitled to all Privileges and Immunities of Citizens in the several States. The US Constitution

Unless you're a fetus. The US Supreme Court

Or Anwar al-Awlaki.

#17 Romney Won't release his bundlers, eh?

What about Obama's bundlers: Jon "I have no idea where that 2.3 Billion Dollars went so I plead the 5th" Corzine and George Soros?

"Someday a real rain will come and wash all this scum off the streets". - Robert DeNiro, Taxi Driver (1976).

#18 Todd just wants the names so he can smear them.

Make no mistake about it!

#19 Todd: Always so prophetic, so

Todd: Always so prophetic, so prescient....and idiotic.

#20 Who cares about. . .

. . .bundlers?? What about Barry's original birth certificate? His college transcripts?? How he got into Occidental then Columbia after "doing blow" and being drunk through most of his high school years? Chuckie, where's the transparency??

Repeal the Seventeenth Amendment.

#21 chuck

the more you blab your liberal agenda, the more stupid you sound. Go on a vacation or go follow your hero around as he daily campaigns. Your remarks fall on nobody's ears.

#22 And what about all those

And what about all those unverified credit card donations to Obeyme in 2008? We never did find out where all that money came from.

F. Chuck is practising projection of the highest order.
