MSNBC Suspends Ed Schultz After He Calls Laura Ingraham a ‘Right-Wing Slut’

Brent Baker's picture

As first picked up before other blogs early Wednesday afternoon by NewsBusters from Brian Maloney’s Radio Equalizer blog, MSNBC host Ed Schultz, on his Tuesday radio show carried by satellite radio, slimed conservative radio host Laura Ingraham as a “right-wing slut.”

Tim Graham’s prescient noontime NB headline: “Will MSNBC Suspend Ed Schultz for Calling Laura Ingraham a 'Right-Wing Slut' and 'Talk Slut'?

Hours later, at 5:51 PM EDT, MSNBC issued this statement:

MSNBC management met with Ed Schultz this afternoon and accepted his offer to take one week of unpaid leave for the remarks he made yesterday on his radio program. Ed will address these remarks on his show tonight, and immediately following begin his leave. Remarks of this nature are unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

After the jump, Radio Equalizer’s audio of Schultz’s May 24 remarks.

ED SCHULTZ: And what do the Republicans thinking about? They're not thinking about their next-door neighbor. They're just thinking about how much this is going to cost. President Obama is going to be visiting Joplin, Mo., on Sunday but you know what they're talking about, like this right-wing slut, what's her name?, Laura Ingraham? Yeah, she's a talk slut. You see, she was, back in the day, praising President Reagan when he was drinking a beer overseas. But now that Obama's doing it, they're working him over. [Audio: Downloadable MP3 clip]

Mediaite caught Ingraham’s mocking reaction posted on her Facebook page:

Re. the crude comments made about me by Ed Schultz on his radio program: First, I was surprised to learn that Ed Schultz actually hosted a radio show. Is it only available online? Second, I have to get back to recording the audio edition of my new book “Of Thee I Zing.” Now I’m tempted to insert one additional zing–about men who preach civility but practice misogyny.

Earlier this month, Schultz “earned” the “Quote of the Year” at the MRC’s 2011 “DisHonors Awards” for screaming on his MSNBC program: “The Republicans lie! They want to see you dead! They’d rather make money off your dead corpse! They kind of like it when that woman has cancer and they don’t have anything for her.”  Video, scroll down to "winner."

>> Many more examples of vile radio comments from Schultz and other left-wing hosts in the MRC’s 2010 Special Report, “The Real Radio Hatemongers: Left-Wing Radio Hosts' Track Record of Vile and Vicious Rhetoric.” <<

#1 El Tubbo better watch what he

El Tubbo better watch what he does. He needs the money MSNBC pays him to buy all that food he chows on. Everybody knows he likes the fancy eclair's though out the day.

#2 No problem, MM.

Bambi still has plenty of stimulus money to funnel to Special Ed's "construction" company.  He'll do fine.

Comrade Bubba

#3 Yeah, wasn't the Fargo Fatass

Yeah, wasn't the Fargo Fatass bragging about how well his construction company was doing??
Hell, mine would probably be doing a lot better too, if I were on the 'take' from the government, and getting paid to spend taxpayer's money on pointless and useless government jobs.............but there's no way that I could EVER qualify for any 'stimulus' money - I could't pass the proctology exam given to me by the Feds.

#4 Double Standard between Sgt Schultz and Imus

Imus uttered the phrase "nappy-headed ho's" and was fired. He was off air for about a year and recovered. Schultz calls Laura Ingraham a "right-wing slut" and gets a week's vacation. I think Schultz was far more offensive and should get the same treatment as Imus -- Fire his ass.

#5 Shultz is a misogynistic chucklehead.

No surprise here. This is what passes for enlightened commentary at MSNBC. The network is unwatchable with its talking heads making such disgusting comments, talking over each other and belittling anyone who doesn't share their narrow, intolerant views of the world.

#6 Only one week??? Shuster got "indefinite" didn't he??

Oh that's right; Shuster insulted a Democrat favorite, not a "right-winger."

MSNBC...the stopped calendar that's half-right once a year......

Please Brent, post the video of his remarks tonight here...I don't know when he's on and don't care.

#7 Even better, MB

" Only one week???"

Apparently he got to pick his own punishment too, lol.

"MSNBC management met with Ed Schultz this afternoon and accepted his offer to take one week of unpaid leave for the remarks he made yesterday on his radio program,” MSNBC said. "

#8 My opinion of Ed's

My opinion of Ed's intelligence has actually risen from this. He managed to get a week's paid vacation to extend his 3-day Memorial Day weekend and he did so by increasing his street cred with his 12 or 13 viewers.

#9 The whole current MSNBC network should be suspended.

MSNBC is a Money Pit loser paying anchors millions for shows 99+% of America doesn't watch.

It is a sick, politically sick, network that gives honest liberals a bad name. NBC should be ashamed of it.

#10 What a shame, Jeep.

There are at least a dozen viewers who will be at wit's end waiting for Special Ed to return to the air.

Maybe this is a good time to revive the invitation to a bar fight, since the big slob obviously has time on his hands.  Maybe now he will show up.

Comrade Bubba

#11 Considering how long their putting the foot down on Olbermann

I think Ed's suspension will only last til Tuesday, after the Memorial Day weekend.

#12 I agree.

He will get an early parole. . .

Repeal the Seventeenth Amendment.

#13 Not a fan but they did the right thing

I am not a fan of MSNBC but one has to congratulate them on being swift on the decision.

#14 "Liberal talk show hosts display hatred ..."

"No matter where you go for news, whether it is radio, newspapers, television, or the internet, you are going to be confronted with liberals spewing some form of hatred against anyone with whom they disagree.

On Friday, Jack Coleman of Newsbusters wrote that so-called comedian Lizz Winstead told Ed Schultz on his radio program that she wanted to invent a collar that would electrocute Glenn Beck. Isn’t that a knee-slapper?

The bombastic Schultz has a long history of such behavior on his program, as documented by Newsbusters. Radio Equalizer has audio of Schultz threatening to burn MSNBC down. In a rant unfit for print here, he stated his desire to beat Fox News in language fit more for a locker room than a broadcast studio.

On May 11, 2009, Schultz called Dick Cheney an “enemy of the country”, and expressed his desire for the death of the former Vice President...."

#15 My prediction:

Ed will excuse himself in some manner by blaming his "outburst" on rage at all the lies spewed by the right, and that he didn't mean Ingraham was a slut in the usual sense of the word, but in the political sense, that she will go along with any right-wing propaganda of the day.....

Then he will say  that still was no excuse on his part, and that he apologizes, but it will not be directly to Ingraham, and  not for denigrating and debasing her, but  to anyone that took offense....

Wouldn't it be great if instead he went on a rant against MSNBC and threatened to "torch this place!!"

#16 mb,

I posted this comment under the original thread regarding if MSNBC would suspend Ed Schultz. It is at the bottom of the second page and probably little-noticed. I'd like to think it bears repeating here as appropriate ( I edited it a little):

By the way, who is a bigger opportunistic media "sl*t" than Ed Schultz, who once broadcasted as a conservative commentator only to slide seamlessly over to being an uber-liberal when he thought it would benefit his career? Well, there is Zsa Zsa Huffington, but that's for another discussion.

Let's make the 2012 campaign: "The War on Error"

#18 I'm curious as to what his

I'm curious as to what his comments will be, but I refuse to add to MSNBC's ratings by watching them for even a few minutes. Instead I will just come to NewsBusters for the rundown.

I'm sure his comments will be something like: "Although I regrettably used inappropriate language, my point is still valid that the Republicans are blah blah blah..."

#19 Ed Shultz

Tough with the women aren't ya Eddie? What can one expect from a 250 lb bed wetter with a vicious jelly doughnut addiction and a bad case of cowardice. A schnook you are and a schnook you'll stay. Enjoy the week off.

#20 I am sorry folks

but BOR is as dumb as they come. He cares about the "folks". Really Bill? What folks? Do you mean the dumbass folks who only watch your show? or do you care about us dumbass MOFOS who dont make as much money as you!

Sorry this is hate as far as BOR is concerned. MM of course says :"blow me"

"The enemy of my enemy is my friend, unless my friend is more evil than my enemy."

#21 Wow I'm just amazed

how Shortbus Eddie didn't complain that he was NOT getting paid for his suspension. His Union Thug friends want paid protest days off, they want free healthcare (which is just stupid......when a road construction crew is out, you have 1 guy digging the ditch, then 1 guy watching the guy dig the ditch, then another guy that is watching the guy who is watching the guy dig the ditch, then another guy watching the guy who is watching the guy who is watching the guy dig the hole.) No wonder this country is screwed.

if he is polishing his resume' to submit it to Al Gore for a gig on Current TV? I am beginning to see a pattern here.

#24 In jest, his resume MUST include

the phrase "I'm gonna torch this place".

#25 Schultz "offered" to take a leave??

If this is true, and not just an attempt for Schultz to save face, MSNBC waited for Schultz to "offer" to take a leave, rather than tell him outright that he is suspended for a week??...And that raises another question...Schultz only gets a week suspension? That's it? Schultz should have had his a$$ handed to him along with a pink slip, and shown the door.

Unbelievable.

"Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction...It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them (our children) to do the same." ~President Ronald Reagan

#26 Imus was shown the door

Speshul Ed should be fired too.

#27 Jeep

Imus was shown the door after Senator Obama called for his firing. I feel certain President Obama will come forward and say the right thing in this situation as well, don't you?

#28 Oh, absolutely!

And Al Roker too, race relations expert and part time weatherman, who called for Imus to be fired, too.

#29 No kidding

But at least Al Roker is consistent in his view that women shouldn't be called hos. According to the music Obama claims to have on his iPod, the same cannot be said of him.

#30 Didn't Boy O'Barry give a

Didn't Boy O'Barry give a speech at some college graduation a couple years ago where he said he didn't know how to use all of those technological gadgets, including an iPod??? And this was AFTER he had some interview with Rolling Stone magazine where he was naming an array of tunes that he HAD on his iPod.

I was REALLY disgusted that he said he had some Howlin' Wolf on his iPod (or at least he SAID he did..........hell, the guy is such a liar, I guess I shouldn't take it too seriously)!!! From what I've read about 'da Wolf'..............he would think that O'Bama as a complete fool and phony!!!!! And Howlin' Wolf COULD back up his comments!!!

#31 Exactly...

I can only guess that the reason that he wasn't fired is because Laura Ingraham is a conservative, and of course, as we all know, the rules of decency and civility don't apply when one is trashing/defaming/slandering (take your pick) Repubs/conservatives (especially Repub/conservative women), do they?

Disgusting.

"Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction...It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them (our children) to do the same." ~President Ronald Reagan

#32 Maybe they left out the part

Maybe they left out the part where ED said "One week or I’m going to torch this f...ing place.”

Edit: Oops, didn't see DJWOLF comment above.

#33 you never know

it's interesting, in these cases, to see what the straw that breaks the camel's back is.

calling Laura a slut is certainly disgusting, but Special Ed has made a career of saying disgusting things. IMHO he should have been fired--not suspended--months ago.

but better late than never! hopefully he DOES follow Olbie to Current TV and from there, into obscurity.

#34 Into obscurity?

I thought Current TV WAS obscurity! Where lame-@ss liberals go to die?

#35 The ratings for Sponge Bob

The ratings for Sponge Bob Square Pants are higher than Mr. Ed. That's got to make MSNBC happy. What a joke of a network.

#36 Punishment FAIL

One week suspension? Weak. Even Wonkette had the decency to fire their house idiot.

I wonder what the new Comcast management is thinking?  Maybe they want MSNBCs ratings to drop even further?

#37 MSNBC better watch out...

Crazy Eddie might torch this [bleep]ing place.

#39 Gutless Management

It looks like Comcast is going to take the route GE took when they had an out of control host: I see nothing; I hear nothing; I say nothing. It's disgraceful, cable or no cable, for any host - left or right to feel comfortable say anything that disgraceful of anyone. Whatever talent Schulz has, and it doesn't appear to be much, it's mind boggling why a corporation like Comcast would endorse anyone doing anything like that. As far as a week off - pleasssssssssssssssssssse He should be fired!!!! Walk into the corporate offices of Comcast and go up to the executive offices, and walk into the first office with a female executive and call her a slut and see how that works out for you. Why is TV any different?

#40 Gee, how much for a murder over at MSNBC?

3 months?

I wonder if Fatass cried again this time.

#41 It depends...

...on who got murdered.

#42 Boy that's certainly severe punishment.

A whole week off. Full pay too? A week off and full pay? How about termination?

hbnolikeee

#43 Holiday Weekend

I'm sure Special Ed will enjoy his "extended" Memorial Day weekend, giving him more time for drinking to excess, beating his wife, shooting his dog - you know, all those special qualities that his true fans admire.

And they sent Bobby Knight to anger management.

#46 Imus and Shuster would've loved that "punishment"

Shuster's comments was unintentionally offensive, more a product of how "pimped out" had become more equated with using or exploiting, and not necessarily about gender and perhaps a generational evolution of the expression. There is no similar defense for using "slut", certainly not one that carries a much softer penalty from the same boss by comparison.

#47 People like Ed Schultz used to disgust me.

Now they barely amuse me.

#48 I feel a song coming on!

#49 Best

Best news of the day, getting rid of this disgrace of a human. Hopefully, after a week, Comcast will figure out no one watches his show anyway and, then get rid of him for good. He is the most fouled mouth bag of blubber and no one will miss him. He and Tingles would do everyone a favor and go work with al gore

#50 Did you see Ed's statement?

Besides the comedy of him implying Laura Ingraham refused to talk to him, the best part were the teary eyes and the begging to keep his job ("six kids and eight grandkids").

My money says he's gone for good.

#51 I won't watch his show...Not even to see...

him grovel and make more of an a$$ of himself than he usually does...I'll have to see if it's on youtube.

Update: Here's a clip of Schultz's apology-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zy75L3J_qo4

He sure looks and sounds like he's whipped...Maybe he's in deeper doo doo with the brass at MSNBC than we think...If so, good...I'd love nothing better than to see him GONE.

#53 That's it? It's nothing but

That's it? It's nothing but a silly slap on the wrist. A 1-week vacation (probably with full Obama pay), then he'll be back at it, bolder than ever, because he got away with it.

You know Obama and the Demorats are secretly high-fiving him behind closed doors. The 2012 campaign will be the nastiest in history, and probably violent. Because the libs are encouraging it.

'Lean Forward'?

Yeah - they want everyone ELSE to - so they can screw them over more easily.

If a Liberal/Democrat politician/media figure wants to put their arms around you, or pat you on the back, all they're doing is looking for a good place to stick a knife.

#62 Jim Webster

His vile comments bubbled to the top and appeared on the front page of AOL (which now owns the Huffington POSt) Do not know if it bubbled up anywhere else. So there is free advertising. NB does give a lot of blog time to Ed also. Maybe reinforcing our sides view of the other side. As an aside NO conservative commentator that I know of and I have listened to degenerates into vile name calling like the leftist ones (maybe Michael Savage but I am not sure about that either). Their idiocy/intolerance/stupidity is always on parade.

#63 Ed the wife beater...

Didn't he have all kinds of domestic abuse charges filed against him before the last divorce? I can't imagine a woman that would actually bed this assclown. He reminds me of those freaks with the "Being a Baby" fetish. I can see him in a diaper with a bonnet covering that fat head and really needing a spanking from a gal named Brunhilda. This is one really sick SOB. Lawrence O'Donnell will be the next lunatic to lose it. He's really pushing the propaganda sauce to the limit. MSNBC. You really really have to wonder......

#64 I can't imagine a woman that would actually bed this assclown

You have limited aquaintance with members of the fairer sex.

#66 In my humble opinion

We should de-fund all of these government-supported shows.

Better yet, MAKE cable, satellite, etc. sell their channels a la carte. $15.00 for service, $.50 per channel monthly. THEN we'd see some action.

Need I remind you what the 'MS' in MSNBC stands for?  www.ubuntu.com

#67 Suspended?

Just a week in the time-out-without-pay chair? Boy, that'll leave a mark, like fining an NBA star $10,000 for bad behavior.

But if you think about it: Why didn't MSNBC not fire him completely? Why didn't they just kick him under the curb? Maybe because that's the best they can attract? They can't find anyone else better?

#68 After the November elections

After the November elections there were a lot of unemployed leftwing fundamentalists. I think they should fire Shultz and hire Alan Grayson. That guy's such a loon I might even turn in just to see what his medications make him say!

#72 A bit of integrity

I just saw a clip of Schultz's apology on his TV show tonight. I think he's a boneheaded, boorish ass, but I'll give him credit for one thing. He didn't offer a wishy-washy half-apology "to anyone I might have offended." Nope, instead he said, "I used vile, inappropriate language when talking about Laura Ingraham. I am deeply sorry, and I apologize.... I apologize to you, Laura, and ask for your forgiveness." After his message, they went to a commercial and then returned with a replacement host.

So, he manned up, apologized directly and unambiguously, and left. Good for him.

Here's a link to the clip:
http://snipurl.com/27xgno [www_realclearpolitics_com]

#73 "Manned up?"

I just read a TV columnist from Baltimore who wants him fired. A liberal leaning TV columnist. Says this is the same as a man who beats the **** out of his wife and wants let back in the house. Oh, they WILL sound convincing, then.

#74 Manned up about the apology

Sorry, I only meant he looked straight at the camera and apologized without trying to hem and haw. (Just remember how Letterman joked and guffawed his apologyies about Bristol Palin and about cheating on his wife.)

I didn't know anything about wife abuse. If that's true, they should fire him and then he should be beaten with a whip.

Update: His "slut" comment and suspension are already on his Wikipedia page!

#75 I didn't mean he beat his wife!

I just said the columnist said it reminded him of the apology a wife-beater makes. After the fact.
Ed has been too hateful for too long and has too long a history of outbursts that are embarrassing to a parent company to continue to be employed.

#76 It's 1:00 am!

No, no. It's global warming that made me misread you. Yeah, that's the ticket.

#77 Schulz stated that...

....his comments didn't meet his standards.......which is not difficult because his program HAS no standards. Ed needs to go, others would have been fired for this outrage.

#78 He apologized to Laura and now he gets a week off without...

pay. I wonder if he believes any publicity, good or bad, is good publicity? For sure, he got a lot of publicity for this episode. You wonder if he would have apologized if his job wasn't threatened? I don't think so.

#79 I tried watching this show

I tried watching this show when I started DVR'ing MSNBC and FOX a few years ago. I remember Ed saying he was a blue collar R, but what he said didn't sound like an R at all. He also did the slimey bs that Obly and Maddow did, so I dropped all 3 of them. I kept Maddow & Matthews a tad longer than Ed & Olby, but the pattern that emerged was so disgusting, I gave up on all but Morning Joe.

#80 HA!

Well it couldn't have happened to a more deserving IDIOT! SPECIAL ED, YA GOTTA LOVE IT!

#81 Pardon me for being cynical

Pardon me for being cynical but based on Schultz' past behaviors I doubt the sincerity of his "apology" and I suspect the "apology" was written for him by MSNBC brass to read on-air and he did so just to save his job.

Once his vacation...er...suspension is done, he'll slowly creep back into his old ways.

I'm kind of ashamed to bring the name up but Dr. Phil McGraw has a saying that proved true more often than not, "The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior."

Remember, Ed "Short Bus" Schultz has a long, documented (thanks NB & Radio Equalizer) history of making abusive, vitriolic statements and he's just not going to go "cold turkey."

My question for everyone to ponder is this: just how many more of these incidents will have to occur before he is off-the-air permanently both on radio and television?

#82 Draining the MSNBC swamp?

Draining the MSNBC swamp?

#83 I won't be convinced of that

I won't be convinced of that until I see several firings of MSNBC hosts in a short timeframe.
